LiveJournal is a vital online community (masquerading as blog software) that was started in 1999 by Brad Fitzpatrick as a way to keep his high school friends up to date. Now on their home page LiveJournal boasts 20.7 million journals and communities created since then. LJ was purchased by Six Apart, Ltd. but is now owned by Russian developers SUP.

LiveJournal is free to join, but the features, storage and image upload capabilities are limited unless you upgrade to the Paid account. This program is ideal for writers and artists with enough technical know-how to figure out how things work and how to make LJ’s features work for them. There are plenty of ways someone with a little CSS and HTML can have a great time here.

Aside from comments, there are no statistics on traffic and referrers though. LiveJournal was designed less for commercial use and more for personal use and community building.

After signing up, you will be granted access to your account and profile. We still remember when we first used LiveJournal back in 1999 and online journal keeping was still a major novelty - we spent a long time filling out the profile and didn't care what the template looked like! These days, the focus is on design and there are a lot of LJ templates from which to choose.

Once you choose a theme you can opt to customize the individual elements:

Display

  • Mood themes
  • Navigation strip
  • Presentation

Text

  • Page
  • Navigation
  • Entries
  • Comments

Sidebars

  • Setup
  • Ordering
  • Custom

Here you can also add the URL for a custom external stylesheet or create your own custom CSS (cascading style sheet).

When posting inside LJ or from the client, you can choose rich text editor or HTML.

LJ Labs is a great feature where developers are working on new features. Aqua broadcasts in real time all of the public entries published in LiveJournal. The size of links is in inverse proportion to the length of the entry, i.e. the shorter the entry, the larger the font and the quicker the speed of the text. When viewing Aqua you can control the speed of the feed using your keyboard. They are also Beta testing a dashboard to replace the current member portal which is currently a bit crowded and not very well organized.

Remote posting is totally covered with this program. You can post from your mobile phone, email or you can also choose to download a client to upload your pictures and posts more easily.

You can batch upload then tag, categorize, annotate, caption, etc.

You can choose to have ads placed in a variety of different layouts as well as choosing horizontal, vertical or between entries.
